Sleep near Piazza del Popolo if you are booking a Tuscany or Orvieto coach day. Four of the five coach tours on this site meet on the piazza and the fifth a short walk away on Piazzale Flaminio, early in the morning, and they return to the same side of the city 11 to 12 hours later, so you walk to the bus and back. If your wine day is in Frascati, stay near Termini, where the regional trains leave for the 30-minute ride. The private tastings with hotel pickup collect you from your hotel or a designated location in Rome, so confirm your address when you book. Frascati itself suits a slower stay among the vineyards, with Rome about 30 minutes away by train. The Rome: Tuscany & Montepulciano Day Trip with Lunch & Wines, featured on this page, meets by the lion fountain and obelisk in the middle of Piazza del Popolo.
Piazza del Popolo and the Spanish Steps
This is the area for the long days. The Montepulciano day and the Orvieto “3 Regions” day both meet in the middle of Piazza del Popolo by the fountain, and the two Montepulciano and Montalcino tours meet at the entrance of the Leonardo da Vinci Museum beside the church of Santa Maria del Popolo. The Pienza and Civita day meets on Piazzale Flaminio, a short walk from Flaminio station on metro Line A. Coming back, the Montepulciano day drops off on Viale Giorgio Washington or by the Flaminio obelisk, the Orvieto day finishes on Viale Giorgio Washington, and the other two return to Piazza del Popolo. After an 11 to 12-hour day, a hotel a few minutes away means no taxi and no metro.
The trade-off comes on a Frascati day. From here you take metro Line A from Flaminio to Termini first, then the train.
- Rocco Forte Hotel De Russie: on Via del Babuino, about 165 ft (50 m) from Piazza del Popolo, with garden grounds; Flaminio metro is about 1,000 ft away.
- Hotel Valadier: about 200 m (650 ft) from the piazza, with a rooftop terrace and a wine cellar of more than 400 labels, if one day of tasting is not enough.
- Hotel Mozart: a 4-star near Via del Corso, a 5-minute walk from the Spanish Steps, with a rooftop terrace.
- Il Corso Comfort Rooms: guesthouse rooms off Via del Corso, a 5-minute walk from Flaminio metro, the budget pick of the four.

Stay here if your wine days are by train. The regional trains to Frascati leave from Roma Termini, and so do the trains to Orvieto, where a winery tour picks you up in town. The Frascati operators suggest the 9:49 from Termini (9:54 on Sundays), which a hotel within a 10-minute walk makes easy. Monti, a short walk away, has restaurants and shops for the evening.
Termini also works for a single coach day: metro Line A runs from Termini to Flaminio for the Piazza del Popolo meeting points. Allow time for that ride before an early start, and check your voucher for the departure time.

A night or two in Frascati puts you beside the vineyards where the half-day tours start. Five of the Frascati tours meet outside Frascati station, so from a hotel near the station you walk to the start, and Rome is about 30 minutes away by train for sightseeing days. The town centre is uphill from the station: Piazza Marconi is about 1.8 km and roughly 25 minutes on foot, climbing about 100 m.
Frascati is the wrong base for a Tuscany coach day: you need an early train into Termini and then the metro to Flaminio before the coach leaves, so check the timetable the night before. On Saturdays three Frascati tours start at Tor Vergata station instead, so check how you reach the start from town.
- Hotel Cacciani: family-run, about 350 m from Frascati station, with a panoramic terrace and a restaurant.
- Colonna Hotel: about 150 m (490 ft) from Frascati station, with trains to Rome in about 30 minutes.
- Hotel Flora: about a 5-minute walk from central Frascati, with parking and a terrace the listing describes as looking over Rome’s rooftops.

If your wine day falls on a travel day
Keep the coach days away from your arrival and departure days. They start early and end 11 to 12 hours later, which leaves no margin for a delayed flight or a late check-in. A Frascati half day fits better on the edges of a trip: the private tastings take 3 hours from your hotel and back, and the train tours finish in the afternoon. If you want both kinds of trip, staying near Termini gives you the Frascati and Orvieto trains on foot and the coach by metro.
Booking tips
Book the tour before the room. Every tour on this site has free cancellation up to 24 hours before on GetYourGuide, so choose your date first and then look for a hotel near its start. Two of the coach operators ask you to arrive 15 minutes early, so a hotel near the piazza makes that easy.
Check the day of the week. Trains to Frascati run about hourly on weekdays but about every two hours on Sundays, and on Saturdays several Frascati tours change their start station, as our Rome to Frascati train guide explains. The half-day wine tours page compares the train tours with the private pickups, and the Tuscany wine tours page compares the coach days.
For the flagship day, read our breakdown of the Montepulciano and Pienza tour, or compare all the wine days side by side. When you have a date, check availability.
