How a Tuscany Wine Day from Rome Works
Four things to settle before you book a full day in the Tuscan hill towns.
Choose the towns
Each shared tour pairs a winery lunch with two places. City Wonders goes to Montepulciano and Pienza, VEDITALIA and MORANDITOUR to Montepulciano and Montalcino, and The Tour Guy's Pienza option to Pienza and Civita di Bagnoregio, a village in Lazio. The private day covers Montepulciano and Pienza at your own pace.
Be at Piazza del Popolo early
The shared coaches leave from Piazza del Popolo or nearby Piazzale Flaminio, both close to Flaminio metro on Line A. A City Wonders reviewer mentions a 7:30 start, so check the time on your voucher and plan breakfast before you go. The Tour Guy asks you to arrive 15 minutes early.
The day in Tuscany
Expect about 2 to 3 hours on the coach each way, a coffee stop included. In between you get one to two and a half hours in each town and a sit-down winery lunch with the tasting. The streets are steep and cobbled, so wear shoes you can walk in all day.
Back in Rome in the evening
Shared days run 11 to 12 hours and finish near Piazza del Popolo or Viale Giorgio Washington. The private day lasts about 10 hours and drops you at your hotel. Every tour on this page can be cancelled free of charge up to 24 hours before it starts.

TUSCANY GUIDE
Tuscany Wine Day Trips from Rome Compared
Which towns, which wines and how many hours you spend on the coach to get there.
The Tour Guy’s Tuscany Day Trip with Vineyard Lunch and Wine Tasting has the lowest price of the shared Tuscany days on this site: from $101 per person for 11 hours, rated 4.7 from 174 GetYourGuide reviews. Read the option name before you pay. The bookable option is Pienza and Civita di Bagnoregio: an hour and a half in Civita, which is in Lazio, a winery lunch near Montepulciano with three wines, then an hour in Pienza. You do not walk through Montepulciano itself.
If the town of Montepulciano matters more to you, City Wonders’ Tuscany & Montepulciano Day Trip with Lunch & Wines is the most-reviewed tour on this site, 4.7 from 3,480 GetYourGuide reviews, from $131 per person. Prices were checked in October 2026 for a real date.
Every Tuscany day here is long. The coaches leave Piazza del Popolo or Piazzale Flaminio early, the itineraries list about 5 to 7 hours of coach time, and you are back in Rome 11 to 12 hours after you left.

How long a Tuscany day from Rome takes
By road and without traffic, Montepulciano is about 177 km from Roma Termini, roughly 2 hours 15 minutes. Pienza is about 188 km away and Montalcino about 204 km, close to 3 hours. The coach itineraries allow about 2 to 3 hours for each leg, coffee stop included.
On the City Wonders Montepulciano day, the two long legs alone come to 5.5 hours. In return you get 85 minutes of guided walk and free time in Montepulciano, 30 minutes at the church of San Biagio, an hour and a half for lunch and the tasting, and an hour in Pienza.
Siena is about 229 km from Termini and Greve in Chianti about 266 km, nearly 3.5 hours each way by road. None of the tours on this site goes to Chianti, and neither Chianti nor Siena fits into half a day from Rome. For wine without the long drive, Frascati is 30 minutes by train: see Frascati wine tours from Rome, or weigh the two in Frascati or Tuscany.
The Pienza and Civita di Bagnoregio day
The Tour Guy sells this listing as a Tuscany day trip, and the option to book is called Pienza & Civita di Bagnoregio with Lunch & Wine. You meet staff in red holding a red sign at Piazzale Flaminio 20, a short walk from Flaminio metro, 15 minutes before departure.
About 2 hours by coach brings you to Civita di Bagnoregio, a village on volcanic cliffs in northern Lazio that you enter on a 300-metre pedestrian bridge. The price covers the shuttle and the €5 entry ticket, and you have 1.5 hours to explore on your own. The bridge path dips gently, then climbs steeply to the village gate. Lunch is at a family-run winery near Montepulciano: pecorino and cured meats, handmade pici with aglione sauce, three wines, then cantucci and Vin Santo. Pienza closes the day with an hour of free time.
Some reviewers found the tasting room loud and rushed, and on one stormy day the group could not cross the bridge and waited in a café. The tour is not wheelchair accessible. Our breakdown of the Pienza and Civita day has the full itinerary.
Montepulciano and Pienza with City Wonders
You meet in the centre of Piazza del Popolo by the fountain with the lions and the obelisk. One reviewer mentions a 7:30 start; check your voucher. After the walk in Montepulciano and the stop at San Biagio, you sit down to a three-course lunch at a farm and winery with a guided tasting that includes Brunello di Montalcino. Brunello comes from Montalcino, so expect it as one of the wines poured, not the winery’s own. Pienza, known for its pecorino, follows.
The Small Group and Private options add a wine and olive oil tasting at Montalcino Castle, and only the Private option adds hotel pickup. A few reviewers found the lunch and the pours small, and the tasting crowded. Infants do not get their own seat on the coach. More in our City Wonders breakdown.
Montepulciano and Montalcino
VEDITALIA’s Montepulciano and Montalcino day (4.6 from 259 reviews) leaves from the Leonardo da Vinci Museum next to Santa Maria del Popolo. You get 1.5 hours in Montepulciano, then lunch in a former friars’ refectory and a tasting of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and Rosso di Montalcino with a sommelier, in a winery dating from the 1200s that holds an Etruscan tomb. Montalcino follows for 1.5 hours; a tasting there and the Temple of Brunello museum ticket cost extra. Departures are guided in Spanish and English, and some reviewers found the constant switching tiring.
MORANDITOUR’s Wine Routes day uses the same meeting spot, gives you 2.5 hours in Montepulciano plus an hour’s tasting, and pours two glasses, a Montepulciano red and a Vino Nobile, with a lunch of cold cuts, cheese and pici al ragù. It holds 4.7 from only 14 reviews and does not take children under 8. Our Montepulciano wine tours page compares the time each tour gives you in town.
A private day in Tuscany
The private Tuscany day from Eternal City private and guided Tours collects you at your hotel in a Mercedes sedan or minivan with a driver-guide. You spend about 2 hours on the road each way, 2.5 hours in Montepulciano with a wine tasting and a visit to part of the town’s underground city, and 2.5 hours in Pienza with photo stops in the Val d’Orcia. Lunch and entrance fees are extra. It holds 4.8 from 39 reviews. A few reviewers got a driver with little English and no vineyard stop, so confirm the language and the winery visit with the operator before your date.
The Tuscan reds you will taste
Both wines on these tours start from Sangiovese. Brunello di Montalcino is 100% Sangiovese from the Montalcino area and cannot be released before 1 January of the fifth year after the harvest. Rosso di Montalcino is its younger sibling, released from 1 September of the year after harvest. Vino Nobile di Montepulciano needs at least 70% Sangiovese and two years of ageing, and it must be made and aged within the commune of Montepulciano. Both became DOCGs in 1980, among Italy’s first.
Before you book
- Walking: the hill towns are steep and cobbled, and none of these tours suits wheelchair users.
- Food: tell the operator about allergies when you book; The Tour Guy offers a vegetarian lunch with advance notice.
- Language: VEDITALIA and MORANDITOUR guide in English and Spanish; the others list English.
- Weather: MORANDITOUR runs in all weather, and layers help between Rome and the hilltops.
Set the three main options side by side in the comparison table, then check availability for your exact date, because prices and seats change.

Tuscany Wine Tours from Rome: Frequently Asked Questions
Distances, hours on the coach, the wines, lunch, Chianti and the private option on a Tuscany day from Rome.
Yes, if you give it the whole day. The shared coach tours on this site leave Piazza del Popolo or Piazzale Flaminio in the early morning and return 11 to 12 hours later, with about 5 to 7 hours of that on the coach. You get one to two and a half hours in each of two towns plus a winery lunch. The private day takes about 10 hours with hotel pickup.
It suits you if the hill towns matter as much as the wine. You see Montepulciano, Pienza or Montalcino and sit down to a winery lunch, but the tasting itself lasts about an hour to an hour and a half of a 12-hour day. If the wine is the point, Frascati is 30 minutes by train. Our Frascati or Tuscany guide sets out the trade-off.
By road from Roma Termini, Montepulciano is about 177 km, Pienza about 188 km and Montalcino about 204 km. Without traffic that is roughly 2 hours 15 minutes to Montepulciano and close to 3 hours to Montalcino. The coach itineraries allow about 2 to 3 hours for each leg, coffee stop included, so the whole day runs 11 to 12 hours.
Plan on about 2 to 3 hours each way on the shared coaches, plus an hour or so between towns. City Wonders' Montepulciano day lists 2.75 hours each way, 5.5 hours for the two long legs alone. The private day lists about 2 hours each way by car. Traffic in and out of Rome can add time, and operators warn that a day can run slightly long.
None of the Tuscany wine tours on this site uses the train; they all go by coach or private car from Rome. If you want a wine day by train, Orvieto in Umbria is the practical choice: the fastest regional trains take about 1 hour 15 minutes from Termini, and a small local winery collects you in Orvieto. See our guide to wine days without a car.
Mostly Sangiovese reds from the two towns the tours visit. City Wonders pours a Brunello di Montalcino at lunch, VEDITALIA pours Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and Rosso di Montalcino, and MORANDITOUR gives you a Montepulciano red and a Vino Nobile. The Pienza and Civita day pours three wines with lunch, then Vin Santo with cantucci.
Both are Tuscan reds based on Sangiovese, from towns about an hour apart by coach. Brunello di Montalcino is 100% Sangiovese and cannot be released before 1 January of the fifth year after the harvest. Vino Nobile di Montepulciano needs at least 70% Sangiovese and two years of ageing within the commune of Montepulciano. Both became DOCGs in 1980, among Italy's first.
On the shared coach days, yes. City Wonders serves a three-course lunch at a farm and winery, The Tour Guy a Tuscan lunch with handmade pici, and VEDITALIA and MORANDITOUR cured meats, cheeses and pici with meat sauce. Some reviewers found the portions small. The private day does not include lunch; your driver suggests a restaurant and you pay on the day.
Near Piazza del Popolo. City Wonders meets by the lion fountain and obelisk in the middle of the square, VEDITALIA and MORANDITOUR in front of the Leonardo da Vinci Museum next to Santa Maria del Popolo, and The Tour Guy at Piazzale Flaminio 20. All are close to Flaminio metro on Line A. Only the private day and City Wonders' Private option include hotel pickup.
Partly. The Tour Guy sells the listing as a Tuscany day trip, but the option is Pienza and Civita di Bagnoregio. Civita is a cliff-top village in Lazio, where you spend 1.5 hours with entry and shuttle included. Lunch is at a winery near Montepulciano and Pienza is in Tuscany, but you do not walk around Montepulciano town. Read the option name before you pay.
Yes. The private Tuscany day collects you at your hotel in a Mercedes sedan or minivan with a driver-guide, spends about 2.5 hours each in Montepulciano and Pienza, and includes a wine tasting. It costs from $432 per person when two travel, lasts about 10 hours and excludes lunch. A few reviewers got a driver with little English, so confirm the language before your date.
Not easily. Greve in Chianti is about 266 km from Roma Termini, nearly 3.5 hours each way by road without traffic, and none of the tours on this site goes there. The coach days here go to Montepulciano and Montalcino instead, about 177 and 204 km from Termini, which they reach in about 2 to 3 hours. For a short wine trip, Frascati is 30 minutes by train.
