Rome: Tuscany & Montepulciano Day Trip with Lunch & Wines

About This Experience
This City Wonders coach day takes you from Rome to two Tuscan hill towns, Montepulciano and Pienza, with a farm-winery lunch in between. It runs 11 to 12 hours door to door, and the coach legs from Rome and back take about 2 hours 45 minutes each way. With 4.7 from 3,480 GetYourGuide reviews, it is the most-reviewed wine day trip on this site, and the group option starts from $131 per person.
You meet at the lion fountain and obelisk in Piazza del Popolo. The first stop is Montepulciano, with a guided walk and free time (about 85 minutes), then a 30-minute photo stop at the Renaissance church of San Biagio just below the town. Lunch and the wine tasting take about 1.5 hours back near Montepulciano. After an hour's drive you get an hour in Pienza, known for its pecorino, before the long ride back to Rome.
Lunch is three courses at a Tuscan farm and winery, with a fresh pasta demonstration and a guided tasting led by a wine expert. The tasting includes a Brunello di Montalcino. Brunello is made around Montalcino, so treat it as a wine you taste here, not one the Montepulciano estate produces. The Small Group and Private options add a visit to Montalcino Castle with wine and olive oil tasting, and only the Private option includes hotel pickup.
The day suits first-time visitors who want Tuscan towns and a wine lunch without driving, and who can sit through a long coach day. Expect an early start and steep streets in both towns. Some reviewers found lunch small and the wine pours modest, and a few disliked tasting in a busy, noisy room. If wine is the main reason you are going, a Frascati half-day keeps you closer to the vines for far less travel.

What Travelers Say
Rated 4.7/5 by 3,480 verified GetYourGuide travelers.
The tour was truly a perfect day! We left Rome on a comfortable tour; the first stop was a break to rest from the journey, where we started tasting local products! An expert guide was waiting for us in Montepulciano, and he showed us the most beautiful spots in the town and shared a wealth of information about the area. Lunch was extraordinary, at the “Il Pulcino” farm, known throughout Tuscany… We visited their winery and enjoyed traditional dishes! After lunch, we made a photo stop at the Church of San Biagio and then finally arrived in Pienza, a small and charming village, where we had some free time and enjoyed a magnificent view of the Val d'Orcia. I would like to thank our guide Patrizia, who was with us the whole time. She handled some challenges along the route with firmness and professionalism and was always kind to all of us. Greetings also to our driver Marco, who used his skill to help us avoid a traffic jam on the way back!

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does the Tuscany and Montepulciano day trip cost?
The group option starts from $131 per person on a date checked in October 2026. Small Group and Private options cost more and add extras such as the Montalcino Castle tasting. Check your own date, because prices change with demand.
Does the winery make Brunello di Montalcino?
No. The listing says the tasting includes a Brunello di Montalcino, and that wine comes from the Montalcino area. The lunch winery is near Montepulciano, so you taste a Brunello there without visiting where it is made.
Where does the tour start and end?
You meet at the lion fountain and obelisk in the middle of Piazza del Popolo, near Flaminio metro on Line A. Drop-off points in Rome include Viale Giorgio Washington and the Flaminio obelisk. Hotel pickup is included only with the Private option.
How long is the day and how much of it is on the coach?
Plan for 11 to 12 hours. The drive from Rome to Montepulciano and the drive back from Pienza are each listed at about 2 hours 45 minutes, plus short hops between stops. The rest is the two towns, San Biagio and lunch.
Can I bring a baby or a wheelchair user?
The tour is not suitable for wheelchair users, and the towns have steep streets. Infants can come but do not get a reserved seat on the coach. Several reviewers also felt a 12-hour day is hard going for very young children.
