The Experience
A coach from Piazza del Popolo, 1.5 hours in Montepulciano, Vino Nobile and Rosso di Montalcino with a sommelier over lunch, then Montalcino.
The VEDITALIA day in order, from the meeting point to the evening return.
Your guide waits in front of the Leonardo da Vinci Museum, next to the church of Santa Maria del Popolo, holding a Veditalia sign marked MONTEPULCIANO. Flaminio station on metro Line A is the closest stop. Check the start time on your voucher, because the coach leaves early in the morning.
The first leg is about 1.5 hours on an air-conditioned coach with Wi-Fi, then a 20-minute break somewhere in Tuscany and one more hour to Montepulciano. Headsets are included, and the tour leader speaks both Spanish and English, so expect commentary in two languages throughout the day.
You get 1.5 hours to walk the historic centre, which climbs gently, with free time for photos or a gelato. Then a sommelier leads a tasting of Vino Nobile and Rosso di Montalcino in a winery dating from the 1200s, with an Etruscan tomb, and lunch is pici with meat sauce in the old friars' refectory.
An hour on the coach takes you to Montalcino for 1.5 hours, starting at the former convent of Sant'Agostino. A tasting there and the Temple of Brunello ticket cost extra. After a break at Fabro you are back at Piazza del Popolo about 12 hours after you left. Free cancellation runs to 24 hours before.

MONTEPULCIANO GUIDE
How long each tour gives you in town, what Vino Nobile is, and Montalcino or Pienza as the second stop.
For a wine day built on Montepulciano, book VEDITALIA’s Tuscany, Montepulciano Tour with Wine & Lunch. You get 1.5 hours in the town, then a sommelier pours Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and Rosso di Montalcino over lunch in a winery dating from the 1200s, and the afternoon is in Montalcino. It costs from $121 per person, runs 12 hours from Piazza del Popolo and holds 4.6 from 259 GetYourGuide reviews. Prices were checked in October 2026 for a real date.
For longer in the town itself, MORANDITOUR’s Montepulciano and Montalcino, on the Wine Routes gives you 2.5 hours plus an hour’s tasting at the same price, though it has only 14 reviews so far. If you would like Pienza as the second stop, City Wonders’ Tuscany & Montepulciano Day Trip with Lunch & Wines costs from $131 and is the most-reviewed tour on this site, 4.7 from 3,480 reviews.
Montepulciano is about 177 km from Roma Termini by road, roughly 2 hours 15 minutes without traffic, so each of these is a full day.

The old centre climbs towards Piazza Grande, so 85 minutes covers a guided walk and a short look around, while 2.5 hours leaves time to sit down for a coffee or browse the wine shops. VEDITALIA warns of a slight incline, and City Wonders says some of the towns are steep. Two of these days, The Tour Guy’s and the 3 Regions trip, stop only at a winery or farmhouse in the countryside near Montepulciano, so book one of the first four if the town is the reason you are going. The Tuscany wine tours page compares the full Tuscany line-up.
Vino Nobile di Montepulciano became a DOC in 1966 and a DOCG on 1 July 1980, among Italy’s first. It is made from at least 70% Sangiovese, which the Consorzio’s own texts also call Prugnolo Gentile, with up to 30% of other authorised Tuscan varieties. The wine must be made and aged within the commune of Montepulciano for at least two years from 1 January after the harvest; a Riserva needs three, including six months in bottle. Vineyards sit at roughly 250 to 600 metres. Rosso di Montepulciano is the younger red from the same zone, released from 1 March of the year after the harvest.
On the VEDITALIA day the sommelier pours Vino Nobile. MORANDITOUR’s lunch comes with a glass of Montepulciano red and one of Vino Nobile. City Wonders’ tasting includes a Brunello di Montalcino, which comes from Montalcino, so if Nobile is what you want to taste, the first two suit you better.
The Consorzio del Vino Nobile describes underground cellars beneath the historic centre. On Piazza Grande, Cantina Contucci dates its winery to the 12th century, older than the 16th-century palazzo above it. The tours here do not say which cellar they use, so do not book one expecting a particular name.
What they do describe: VEDITALIA’s tasting takes place in a medieval winery from the 1200s that holds a 2,000-year-old Etruscan tomb, and MORANDITOUR describes a 13th-century cellar with an Etruscan tomb too. The private day includes a visit to part of Montepulciano’s underground city, and one reviewer counted about 240 steps down, so expect stairs.
Montepulciano d’Abruzzo is a separate red DOC from the Abruzzo region, with its own Consorzio, and has no connection to the Tuscan town or to Vino Nobile, which is Sangiovese-based. If a wine list in Rome offers Montepulciano by the glass, ask which one you are getting.
Pick Montalcino if you want a second wine town. It is about an hour from Montepulciano by coach, and its whole municipal territory is the Brunello zone: 24,000 hectares, of which only 15% is under vine. Brunello di Montalcino is 100% Sangiovese and cannot be released before 1 January of the fifth year after the harvest. Both VEDITALIA and MORANDITOUR start there at the former convent of Sant’Agostino, home to the Temple of Brunello museum.
Pick Pienza for the setting. Its historic centre has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996, it sits in the Val d’Orcia, inscribed in 2004, and the town is known for its pecorino. You get an hour there on the City Wonders day and 2 hours on the private day.5 hours.
See the three coach days side by side in the comparison table, read our VEDITALIA breakdown, or weigh a long Tuscany day against a short one in Frascati or Tuscany. When you have a date, check availability, because coach seats and prices change.

"It was a perfect day. The right balance of things to see and free time. The beauty of the countryside and the towns is without compare. Even the stopover at the souvenir shop allowed for tasting local products. Generally, I would avoid huge buses, but for some reason, everyone was so extremely sweet and funny, that "the more, the merrier". The guide, Elise, was a master of languages,a sweetheart, knowledgeable, kind, fun."
"It was a wonderful tour! New and comfortable bus, very helpful and friendly guide, and the timing was perfect for everything. The food was very tasty and the wines were wonderful!"

"The guide was excellent! Corina. Although it takes about 3 hours to get there and then back, it's really worth it! It's a wonderful view of Tuscany, wine tasting, and walking through small medieval towns. I highly recommend it!"

Distance, getting there without a car, time in town, Vino Nobile, the cellars, and Montalcino or Pienza.
About 177 km by road from Roma Termini, roughly 2 hours 15 minutes without traffic. On a coach tour, allow about 2.5 hours for the outward leg including a coffee break: VEDITALIA lists 1.5 hours, a 20-minute stop and another hour, and City Wonders lists 2.75 hours. The whole day, there and back, runs 11 to 12 hours.
The simplest way is a coach day tour from Piazza del Popolo, which handles the drive both ways and includes lunch and a tasting. Three coach tours on this site visit the town itself, from $121 per person, and a private day with hotel pickup costs from $432 per person when two travel. Our guide to wine days without a car covers the other options.
None of the Montepulciano tours on this site uses the train; they all go by coach or private car. If you want to travel independently by rail, plan the route on Trenitalia's own journey planner and allow time for the last stretch up to the hilltop town. For a wine day that works well by train from Rome, Orvieto is the easier choice, from about 1 hour 15 minutes on the fastest trains.
Yes, if you accept a long day. You get 85 minutes to 2.5 hours in a hilltop town known for Vino Nobile, a tasting in an old cellar and a sit-down lunch, then Montalcino or Pienza. The cost is about 5 to 7 hours on the coach and an early start. If the wine matters more than the town, Frascati is 30 minutes by train from Rome.
Yes. Montepulciano is a hill town in Tuscany, and its red, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, has to be made and aged within the town's own commune. It is easy to mix up with Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, a separate red DOC from the Abruzzo region that has no connection to the Tuscan town. Every Montepulciano tour on this page goes to the Tuscan town.
A red wine made from at least 70% Sangiovese, with up to 30% of other authorised Tuscan varieties, made and aged within the commune of Montepulciano for at least two years. It became a DOC in 1966 and a DOCG in 1980, among Italy's first. VEDITALIA's sommelier pours it, and MORANDITOUR serves a glass of it with lunch.
No. Montepulciano d'Abruzzo is a separate red DOC from the Abruzzo region, with its own Consorzio, and has no connection to the Tuscan town or to Vino Nobile. The Tuscan wine from the town is Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, and its younger sibling is Rosso di Montepulciano. If a menu in Rome lists just Montepulciano, ask which one it means.
Among the coach days, MORANDITOUR's Wine Routes tour gives you 2.5 hours in town plus an hour's tasting, from $121, though it has only 14 reviews. VEDITALIA gives 1.5 hours and City Wonders 85 minutes plus 30 at San Biagio. The private Tuscany day also allows 2.5 hours, with a tasting and part of the underground town included.
Yes, on some tours. The Consorzio describes underground cellars beneath the historic centre. VEDITALIA's tasting is in a winery from the 1200s with a 2,000-year-old Etruscan tomb, MORANDITOUR describes a 13th-century cellar, and the private day visits part of the underground town, with plenty of stairs. None of the tours names its cellar in advance.
They are two Tuscan hill towns about an hour apart by coach, each with its own Sangiovese red. Montalcino makes Brunello, 100% Sangiovese and released no earlier than the fifth year after the harvest. Montepulciano makes Vino Nobile, at least 70% Sangiovese. VEDITALIA and MORANDITOUR visit both in one day, with 1.5 hours in Montalcino.
You do not have to choose: City Wonders visits Montepulciano for 85 minutes and Pienza for an hour, and the private day gives each 2.5 hours. Pienza has no winery stop of its own on these tours, but its historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the town is known for pecorino. Montepulciano is where the wine and cellars are.
On the coach days, yes. VEDITALIA serves cured meats, cheeses and pici with meat sauce in an old friars' refectory, with a vegetarian version available. MORANDITOUR serves cold cuts, cheese, bruschetta and pici al ragù, and City Wonders a three-course lunch at a farm and winery. The private day leaves lunch to you at your own cost.
