"The wine tasting experience itself was amazing. We learned so much about different wines. I am not a fan of olive oil, but they presented us with the best tasting olive oil that I ever tasted. I even bought a bottle to bring home. What I didn't like is that we were waiting for the driver to pick us up. I private van pulled up in front of us. I approached the driver and asked who he was there to pick-up. He said Mr. John something. after a few minutes my phone ranged. It was the driver who was parked in front of us. I did not appreciate that the driver wasn't given my correct name. I am AL which is nowhere close to John. The driver was very good. He was friendly and also a good driver."

How a Half-Day Wine Tour Works
The four decisions that set your morning or afternoon in the Castelli Romani.
Choose train or pickup
The shared tours start outside Frascati station, so you take the regional train from Roma Termini. The private tastings send a driver to your hotel and bring you back, with no ticket to buy and nothing to navigate.
Get to the hills
The train takes about 30 minutes and a single ticket costs €2.10. Operators suggest the 9:49 from Termini, or 9:54 on Sundays. A private driver reaches the estate in 20 to 45 minutes, depending on the tour.
Taste at the estate
Expect a cellar visit and three wines on most tours, often a Frascati Superiore, a local red and the sweet Cannellino. The train tours add a farmhouse or osteria lunch; the private tastings serve bread, olive oil and local snacks.
Back in Rome
The private tastings last 3 hours door to door. The train tours run 3 to 5 hours from the station, and an osteria lunch on one of them ends around 3 to 3:30 p.m. Free cancellation runs to 24 hours before.

HALF-DAY GUIDE
Half-Day Wine Tours from Rome Compared
Train to Frascati or a driver from your hotel: what each costs, what you eat and how long you are away.
A half-day wine tour from Rome means Frascati and the Castelli Romani hills, and you have two ways to do it. Take the regional train to Frascati and join a shared farmhouse tour outside the station, from $83 per person plus a €2.10 ticket each way, or have a private driver collect you at your hotel for a three-hour tasting in the same hills, from $139 per person when two travel. The train tours include lunch. The private tastings serve local food with the wine and leave lunch to you. Prices were checked in October 2026.
The tour featured here is the Countryside Wine Tasting with Local Family & Food Pairing. A driver picks you up in Rome, drives about 20 minutes to a historic Frascati estate with 17th-century buildings and underground cellars, and gives you two hours there for the visit and a guided tasting with local food, fresh bread and olive oil. It holds 4.8 from 208 GetYourGuide reviews. One low-rated review describes a very short look at the vines before the tasting, so book it for the cellars, the wine and the ease of the pickup.
Frascati is about 20 km from Termini by road, and of the wine areas the tours on this site visit, the Castelli Romani is the one closest to the city. Frascati’s vineyards grow on volcanic soil on the northern slopes of the Alban Hills. Tuscany and Orvieto are full days of 11 to 12 hours by coach, which our Frascati vs Tuscany guide weighs against a half day.
Quick picks
- Lowest price: the Wine Tour & Farmhouse Lunch in the Vineyard, from $83, 3 hours at a family farmhouse with three wines and a chef’s lunch, 4.9 from 20 reviews. The station pickup is at 11:45, which leaves time for a coffee in town first.
- Most reviewed half day on this site: the Half-Day Frascati Wine Tour with Farmhouse Lunch, from $100, 4 hours, a guided walk in Frascati with a glass and a snack, then three wines and lunch at the farmhouse, 4.9 from 524 reviews.
- Pasta with your wine: the Pasta Masterclass & Wine Tour in the Vineyard, from $100, 4 hours, three pasta shapes made with a chef, then a tasting and lunch, 4.9 from 183 reviews.
- From your hotel door: the private countryside tasting above, from $139 per person for two, 3 hours.
- A longer private tasting: the Private Castelli Romani Wine Tasting Tour, from $155 per person for two, a 90-minute tasting after a walk through underground cellars, 4.8 from 93 reviews. Guests must be 17 or older.
- On two wheels: the Frascati Tour in E-Bike with Wine Tasting, from $90, 3.5 hours and about 25 km to the Tusculum archaeological park and a cellar tasting, 5.0 from 45 reviews. It does not run on rainy days.
By train to Frascati: the shared half-day
Regional trains run non-stop from Roma Termini to Frascati in about 30 minutes, and a single ticket costs €2.10. On weekdays there is roughly one direct train an hour; on Sundays the timetable thins to about one every two hours, so plan the return before you go. The operators suggest the 9:49 from Termini (9:54 on Sundays) and meet you outside Frascati station. From there a car or van covers the few minutes out to the vines. Validate a paper ticket at Termini before you board; app and online tickets need no validation.
Three of these tours are run from the same family farmhouse, a few minutes’ drive from town: the 4-hour farmhouse lunch tour, the pasta class and the 3-hour version that starts at noon at the farm. All three include a tasting of the family’s wines and olive oil, and lunch is cooked on site. Our breakdown of the farmhouse lunch tour covers the day minute by minute, and the pasta page compares the cooking-class option.
Two other operators split the day between a winery and the town. The Frascati: Half Day Wine Tour meets at 10:19 on weekdays, tastes Frascati Superiore, a red and the sweet Cannellino at a 16th-century family vineyard, then walks you through town before an osteria lunch that finishes around 3 to 3:30 p.m. It costs from $106 and holds 4.8 from 15 reviews. The Frascati Wine Tour with Lunch and Vineyard tour follows a similar plan with a cap of 11 guests, from $122 and 4.7 from 19 reviews.
Only one of the tours on this site includes the train ticket. Frascati Wine Road from Rome: Tasting & Lunch starts at Termini and runs 6 hours, with a vineyard walk, three wines, street food in town and a trattoria lunch. It costs from $119 and holds 4.7 from 271 reviews.
Saturdays change the plan. Three of the station tours move the start to Tor Vergata station on Saturdays, and two of them name a 10:14 train from Termini; the noon farmhouse tour suggests the 8:54 to Frascati instead. Read the Saturday line in your confirmation before you buy a ticket. Our Rome to Frascati train guide covers tickets and timetables.
A private driver from your hotel
Four tours on this site send a driver to collect you, take you to an estate in the hills and bring you back, all in 3 hours. The prices below are per person for a party of two, so check the figure for your own group size.
- The countryside tasting featured here: about 20 minutes by car, two hours at the estate, from $139, 4.8 from 208 reviews.
- The Castelli Romani tasting from the quick picks: 45 minutes each way, an underground cellar visit and a 90-minute tasting with bread, olive oil and regional food, from $155.
- The Rome Countryside: Wine Tasting Tour with Private Driver: 45 minutes each way, a 1.5-hour guided visit to vineyards and cellars with several wines and snacks, guided in English, Italian or Spanish, from $156 and 4.8 from 65 reviews.
- The Rome: Private Castelli Romani Wine Tasting Tour: the Antico Casale estate, three wines with Roman pizza or olive oil, from $175 and 4.6 from 48 reviews.
None of the four includes lunch, and our breakdown of the countryside tasting covers the featured tour in detail. The recurring complaint in their low-rated reviews is short time at the estate for the money, sometimes a quick look at the vines and then the tasting room. Book them for a relaxed private tasting with no logistics. If a vineyard walk and a long lunch matter more to you, the train tours give you both for less. With a hired driver, nobody in your party has to drive after the tasting. Italian law sets zero alcohol for professional drivers, and 0.5 g/l for most other drivers.
What a half day costs
The train tours with lunch cost from $83 to $122 per person, plus €4.20 for a return ticket except on the Wine Road. The private tastings cost from $139 to $175 per person for two, without a meal, which is more than a shared Tuscany coach day at $101 to $131. Our Frascati wine tours page sets every Frascati option side by side.
Frascati’s wines in brief
Most tastings here pour three styles. Frascati Superiore is the dry white, at least 70% Malvasia. Cannellino di Frascati is the sweet one, a DOCG since 2011. The red is usually a local IGT or IGP; the pasta class pours one made from 100% Cesanese.
Before you book

What Guests Say About the Countryside Tasting
Ratings and review counts are GetYourGuide's live figures as of October 2026 and may shift slightly day to day.
"Amazing, quiet and refreshing experience wine tasting after a few hot and chaotic days in Rome. The driver picked us up directly from our hotel, and we had a private table overlooking the vineyard with a sommelier, snacks, and lovely wine (of course). Highly recommend this experience for a break from city life."

"Right from the start, we were made to feel like we were the only 2 people that mattered. Beautiful setting and lovely presentation of wine & food. We were WOWed."
"Private transportation was Great, snacks were nice with the wine."
"Fantastic experience. Our driver Patrick was amazing and helpful."

"It was such a wonderful experience, we loved how intimate the wine tasting was and loved learning about the wines and the history of the beautiful vineyard and winery. We were especially fond of the wine jams! Thank you so much!"
"The pick up driver Max for us was very nice and fun to talk to on the ride up! Our guild at the place was incredible!! So so nice and was very informative with the type of wine we were tasting. Such a fun trip!"
"We had an amazing time at this family-owned winery in the Frascati region just outside of Rome. Stefano, our driver, was fantastic and made the whole trip easy and enjoyable. Valentina, our host and sommelier, was awesome—super knowledgeable, friendly, and made the tasting a lot of fun. The winery is beautiful, the wines were incredible, and the whole experience felt very personal. Definitely book the early time slot if you can—we had the place to ourselves, which made it even better. If you’re looking for a great day in the Italian countryside, this is a must-do!"

Half-Day Wine Tours from Rome: Frequently Asked Questions
How long they take, what they cost, train or pickup, lunch, what to wear and which wines you will taste near Rome.
The private tastings with hotel pickup last 3 hours door to door. The shared Frascati tours run 3 to 5 hours from the station, plus about 30 minutes on the train each way from Termini. The Frascati Wine Road tour, which includes the train, runs 6 hours. Coach days to Tuscany or Orvieto take 11 to 12 hours, so any Frascati option leaves you most of the day in Rome.
Of the wine areas visited by the tours on this site, the Castelli Romani is the closest. Frascati, its best-known wine town, is about 20 km from Termini by road and about 30 minutes by regional train. The vineyards sit on volcanic soil on the northern slopes of the Alban Hills, and the main wines are the dry Frascati Superiore and the sweet Cannellino. See our Frascati wine tours page.
Rome is in Lazio, and the Frascati wines made in the hills just outside the city are Lazio denominations. Frascati Superiore and Cannellino di Frascati became DOCGs in 2011, and plain Frascati remains a DOC. The Orvieto DOC zone straddles Umbria and Lazio, while Tuscany's Montepulciano and Montalcino are full-day trips by coach.
Prices checked in October 2026 ran from $83 per person for a 3-hour Frascati farmhouse tasting with lunch to $122 for a small-group day with an osteria lunch, plus €2.10 each way for the train. The private tastings with hotel pickup cost from $139 to $175 per person when two travel, with food served alongside the wine but no lunch. Check the live price for your date.
The train suits most visitors: it is cheaper, the tours include lunch and the ride takes about 30 minutes. A private pickup suits you if you would prefer no tickets or timetables, are travelling as a small group, or are short on time, since it takes 3 hours from your hotel and back. Low-rated reviews of the private tastings mention short visits for the price. Compare both on our comparison table.
Most train tours do. The Frascati farmhouse tours serve a chef's lunch at the farm, two others take you to an osteria in town, and the Wine Road tour ends at a trattoria. The private tastings with hotel pickup serve local snacks, bread and olive oil with the wine but no full meal, and the e-bike tour includes a tasting only. Eat something before an early private tasting.
You can, but think about the drive home. Italy's general limit is 0.5 g/l of alcohol in the blood, and it is zero for drivers under 21, anyone within three years of passing their car test and professional drivers. A train ticket to Frascati costs €2.10, and the private tours include a driver, so nobody in your party has to drive. Several station tours also accept guests who arrive by car.
Wear comfortable shoes. Several operators recommend them, since you walk through vineyards, down into old cellars and over cobbled streets in Frascati. On summer days bring a hat, sunscreen and water, as one Frascati tour suggests, and on the e-bike tour expect to cycle about 25 km. That tour does not run on rainy days.
Check the train first. Weekday trains to Frascati run about hourly, but Sundays have about one every two hours, and on Saturdays three station tours start at Tor Vergata station instead. Validate a paper ticket before you board; app tickets need no validation. Tell the operator about allergies when you book, and remember every tour here offers free cancellation up to 24 hours before.
Try the local whites from Frascati. Frascati Superiore is the dry style, at least 70% Malvasia, and Cannellino di Frascati is the sweet one. Several tastings also pour a local red: the pasta class serves one made from 100% Cesanese. For the reds of Tuscany, such as Vino Nobile and Brunello, you need a full day; see our Tuscany wine tours page.
Usually, if you say so at booking. The featured private tasting lists vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options on request, and the Frascati pasta class says its lunch can be vegetarian, vegan or gluten-free friendly. One Frascati half-day tour lists itself as unsuitable for people with food allergies, so read the listing and message the operator before you pay.
Yes, for Frascati. A half day covers a cellar visit, three wines and, on the train tours, a farmhouse or osteria lunch, and you are back in Rome by mid to late afternoon. Tuscany and Orvieto are another matter: those coach days take 11 to 12 hours. Our Frascati vs Tuscany guide weighs the two.
